Plankton is a general term for organisms that are moved about by the water currents more than they move (horizontally) on their own. The plankters that whales eat are crustaceans, not algae.
Algae are single-cell plant organisms. Seaweed is a complex plant organism, at least more complex than a single-cell one. Plankton is a generic term for both algae and protozoans.
